Thivya Viswanathan
Program Specialist – Retrofit Accelerator Coach
Alberta Ecotrust Foundation
Thivya pivoted her career from software engineering to energy efficiency and renewable energy for her passion towards finding sustainable solutions for climate change. Growing up in a small town in Southern India, she directly witnessed the impacts of climate change around her and saw how the place she admired as a child for its richness in nature changed so drastically in a decade due to several factors linked to pollution and global warming.
Inspired by a passion for energy conservation and renewable energy ignited during her undergraduate studies in electrical engineering, Thivya redirected her career trajectory, transcending code-writing to embrace the challenge of energy management. Her educational pursuits culminated in a master’s degree in Clean Energy Engineering from UBC, complemented by certifications as a Certified Energy Manager and LEED AP O&M.
With nearly four years in the energy industry, her expertise extends to assisting businesses and corporate entities in measuring, reporting, and benchmarking their environmental footprint, encompassing energy and water consumption, and GHG emissions. Thivya has also provided support for over 50 small to medium-sized commercial enterprises, property management firms, and multi-unit residential buildings with energy and water use benchmarking, GHG accounting, energy efficiency retrofits, and the implementation of EV charging stations.
Beyond the professional realm, Thivya finds solace in the world of literature, immersing herself in books, tuning into insightful podcasts, and seeking tranquillity through hiking.
